Room Vacancy and Openness to Roommate(s)

When a vacancy occurs within a room, residents are expected to demonstrate openness, honesty, and a welcoming attitude toward potential incoming roommates. Living within a shared residential environment is an integral part of the University’s community experience, and maintaining a respectful and inclusive atmosphere benefits all students.

Residents may not advertise, solicit, offer, accept, or exchange a housing assignment, room vacancy, or roommate arrangement for any fee, service, or anything else of value. Attempts to “select” or “screen” potential roommates outside of the official assignment process are not permitted. All placements will be managed through University Housing to ensure fairness and consistency.

Behaviors with the purpose to bully, intimidate, harass, and/or physically harm a potential roommate either in-person, verbally, or through electronic medium (including but not limited to social media, texts, email, etc.) may result in one or all the following:

  • Assignment to a different room and/or residence hall
  • Cancellation of the housing contract*
  • Referral to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards or Institutional Equity & Compliance.

*Cancellation of a student’s housing contract by University Housing does not relieve that student of any fees and/or charges owed under this contract.
