Contract Cancellation Information

Due to the unprecedented challenges students are facing due to COVID-19, we’ve extended our first cancellation fee increase from May 1 to July 1 for all 2020-21 academic year housing contracts.

2020-21 newly admitted UNL students
Cancel prior to July 1, 2020 $0*
Cancel between July 1, 2020 through Aug. 15, 2020 $400*
Cancel between Aug. 16, 2020 through May 8, 2021 40% of remaining balance of contract*
New spring 2021 semester entrants
Cancel prior to Jan. 8, 2021 $400*
Cancel between Jan. 8, 2021 through May 8, 2021 40% of remaining balance*

*Plus nonrefundable $100 contract processing fee. Any nonrefundable contract process fee submitted (or deferred to their student account) with a contract won’t be returned if a student cancels their contract. If a student signed the deferment page of the contract they’re still be responsible for paying the $100 nonrefundable contract processing fee after contract cancellation.

If contract cancellation occurs during the last two weeks of the semester, there will be no credit issued for the remaining days left in the semester.

Students are held liable for room and board charges until the cancellation is approved in writing by University Housing.
  • We cannot take cancellations over the phone. 
  • In order to cancel your housing contract, follow the steps below depending on whether you are cancelling before hall opening or after hall opening. 
  • Withdrawing or suspension from UNL will not automatically cancel your contract. 
  • It is not possible for another UNL department to cancel your contract.

Canceling BEFORE hall opening.

I have NOT picked up my room key and/or have checked into my assigned room/hall.

  • Log into MyRed.
  • Under "Important Links," click the blue "Housing" button.
  • Click "Apply for Housing" in the red navigation bar.
  • Click "Continue" next to the future contract you are wanting to cancel.
  • On the "Housing Application Info" page, select "Yes, I would like to cancel my contract" on the Request to Cancel field.
  • Follow all necessary prompts until you reach the "Contract Cancellation Complete" page.

Canceling AFTER hall opening.

I have picked up my room key and/or have checked into my assigned room/hall.

Anyone wishing to cancel their contract after they have picked up their key and/or checked into their assigned room must contact their Residence Director (RD).  No cancellation will be considered without the proper residence hall check-out form completed, keys returned, etc.
