Learning and Themed Communities

Learning and Themed Communities are groups of students who live together and share an academic major, future career or personal interest/identity.

You'll live together in the same residence hall (suite-style if in a Learning Community; Abel Hall if in a Themed Community) and connect with other students and peer mentors in your field of study or shared interest. Students in Learning Communities take classes together.

You may choose to apply to a Learning Community or opt-in to a Themed Community after completing your Housing Application.

The deadline to apply to a Learning Community is April 1. Students will be notified of their status on April 4.

Note: All Learning Community and Themed Community programs have a residential requirement. If a student is selected to join a Learning Community, they will be placed in the designated suite-style residence hall of the specific program. Questions may be directed to learningcommunities@unl.edu.

Personalizing Your Space

We've included some tips and guidelines below to keep in mind when customizing your room.

  • Use 3M command hooks/strips for decorating concrete surfaces. Small nails may be used for drywall surfaces.
  • Ensure all extension cords are UL approved (safety tested). Multiple outlet plugs must be in good working order and contain a circuit breaker or surge protector.
  • Use wax warmers or potpourri burners with an enclosed heating element and automatic shut-off.
  • Bring a fish! Non-dangerous fish, which live completely underwater, are permitted. Aquariums may be 25 gallons or less.
  • Store your bike in your residence hall room or locked to a bike rack outside.
  • Avoid the use of the following:
    • Screws and staples
    • “PlastiTak” or other gum type adhesives
    • Scotch, duct, electrical or masking tape
    • Rope lights with adhesive (or other similar products)
  • Don’t use paint or wallpaper to permanently modify any surfaces.
  • Don’t bring candles, incense or other flame emitting items.
  • Don’t place personal decorations on the door frame or in the hallway.
  • Don't bring your cat, dog, gerbil, snake, bird, turtle, frog, etc. without prior approval from Services for Students with Disabilities and Housing & Dining (i.e. emotional support animals).
  • Don’t install bike storage hooks in the ceilings, walls or furniture.
  • Don't store mopeds, motorcycles or gasoline powered scooters in rooms/buildings.
  • The use of hoverboards, electric scooters and other electric propulsion devices are not permitted in any residence hall or dining facility. Electric propulsion devices may be stored in your room/suite/unit but must be UL2272 approved.

Approved Appliances

Small appliances, including microwaves, room heaters, air fryers and rice cookers, should meet the following guidelines:

  • No open heating element or flame.
  • Does not release grease, grease laden vapor, smoke or shooting steam/water. (Items that produce grease and limited smoke/steam can be used in designated residence hall public area kitchens and apartment style halls.)
  • 800 Watts or less and UL approved.

Student NCard and Meal Plans

The NCard is designed to be your permanent University of Nebraska–Lincoln photo identification card used by campus departments and offices for identification, authentication, access and purchases.

NCards are also used for meal swipes in any dining center, the Selleck Food Court, Husker Heroes via the Transact mobile ordering app, or at any Herbie's Market.

You may also use your NCard to charge for items that then appear on your centralized bill. This can be used at on-campus coffee shops, restaurants in the Nebraska Union, at the bookstore and more!

Campus Parking & Transit

First-year students living in University Housing can choose to purchase a non-reserved parking permit for a garage or lot near their residence hall, based on availability. Students also have access to a City of Lincoln StarTran bus pass at no additional cost. The bus route connects City, East and Nebraska Innovation campuses.

BikeLNK bicycles are publicly available for shared use for a short period of time, for a fee, as well as electric Bird and Spin scooters.
