Options for Residents over the Winter Interim Period (November 26-January 22)

You’re welcome to continue residing in University Housing. There’s nothing further you need to do to notify us that you’ll be staying. We’ll be charging a lower daily rate over this period due to limited services. Go here to see room and meal rates for the winter interim.

Meal plan swipes for students with the All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plans will end after dinner on November 25. Meal plan swipes will begin January 21. For students that are staying on campus over winter break, there will still be a dining center, Herbie’s Market, and other campus dining options open on campus. To access these restaurants, you may use:

  • Your Winter Interim Meal Plan
  • Remaining fall semester Dining Dollars
  • Ncard (charge to your centralized student bill)
  • Credit/debit cards.
  • If you’re in a traditional or suite-style hall with the All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plan, you’ll be required to purchase a Winter Interim Meal Plan (14 meals/week.) This meal plan will be automatically added.

    If you’re in an apartment-style hall with the All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plan and would like a Winter Interim Meal Plan, email Housing Contracts with your name, NUID, and a statement requesting to have the 14 meals/week meal plan for the additional charge.

    Students with the Gold, Silver, or Bronze meal plans can continue to use their remaining fall semester swipes and Dining Dollars.

Leave end of fall semester, return for the spring semester: Complete the Leave/Return process no later than October 27 to avoid additional daily room/meal charges. If you choose to store your belongings in your room, you’ll be guaranteed the same room back in the spring. Storage is $150/month, pro-rated based on your stay. (See the FAQs for information on storage options.)

Log in to your MyRed, click the blue “Housing” button>select “Apply for Housing” in the red navigation bar>click “Continue” next to the 2020-21 academic year contract>on the “Housing Application Info” page select “I plan to continue living on campus or want the option for in-room storage.” Complete all required pages.

The Leave/Return process in MyRed closes November 30. After November 30, students who choose to leave for at least 30 days over winter break must submit a Leave/Return request by emailing housing.contracts@unl.edu from their Huskers email address with their name, NUID, departure date, arrival date and whether or not they need storage.

Leaving end of fall semester and, not returning: Cancel your contract by October 27 in order to abide by the 30-day cancellation notice policy and avoid additional room/meal charges.

About Interim Housing

What is the interim period?

The interim period is the time between the end of fall semester and beginning of spring semester (November 26-January 22). If students choose to stay during this period, they will be charged for staying (see rate charts). Students can also choose to leave but keep their belongings in their room for a $150/month storage charge (pro-rated based on your stay) or can choose to leave and take belongings. Same room is not guaranteed for spring if student doesn’t pay for storage. While we will try our best, it isn’t guaranteed.

Will I be required to move out after the semester ends in November?

No, students will not be required to move out. Students who opt to go home until the start of the spring semester can maintain their assigned room and leave belongings behind during the break by paying a room hold/storage fee of $150 per month.

For students who cannot go home or continue to have obligations on campus and in the community, the halls will remain open at a discounted interim charge.

Are there charges if I stay in my room over the interim period?

Yes, students are being charged a discounted room and meal rate. Students with the All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plan will be assigned a required Winter Interim Meal Plan (14 meals/week.)

If I check out for the interim period, will I be guaranteed my same room back when I return in the spring?

Students remaining in their rooms or opting for storage over the interim period will be guaranteed their same rooms back. University Housing will try to keep you assigned to your same room, but cannot guarantee it.

In past years I lived in a break housing hall and wasn’t charged additional for the interim period. Why am I being charged this year?

In past years, the room rate totals included daily rates over the interim period for break housing halls. This year, the normal daily rate for the interim period is no longer calculated in the academic year rate. Instead, students are being offered a discounted daily rate over the interim period if they choose to remain in their rooms.

Interim Meals

Will there still be access to meals over the interim period?

Yes, there will still be a dining center, Herbie’s Market, and other restaurants open on campus. Hours of operation can be found here. Students with the All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plan will be assigned a required 14 meals/week meal plan. View the Winter Interim meal plan.

Am I required to have the 14 meals/week meal plan if I decide to reside in my room over the interim period?

Traditional and suite-style residents with an All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plan choosing to remain in their rooms over interim are required to have the 14 meals/week meal plan. Residents with the Gold, Silver or Bronze meal plans can use their remaining fall semester swipes and Dining Dollars.

Apartment-style residents with an All-Access, Platinum, or Diamond meal plan will not be required to have the 14 meals/week meal plan since meal plans are optional in the apartments. Apartment residents can email Housing Contracts to request a 14 meals/week meal plan.

Storage & Shipping
Will students be required to move out of the halls after semester ends in November?

No, students will not be required to move out. Students can continue to reside in University Housing, leave end of fall semester and return in spring, or leave end of fall semester and not return. If students plan to return for spring semester and want to maintain their assigned room, they can leave belongings behind during the break, we will offer the option of a room hold/storage fee of $150 per month.

What is the $150 storage fee?

Students can choose to leave for 30 days or more and leave their belongings to guarantee their same bed when they return. This option requires a $150 per month storage fee. If a student cancels their contract and does plan to return, they have the option to keep their belongings in their assigned room per the flexible room/storage section in their terms of this contract until May 8, 2021.

Why is there a storage fee?

The contract only takes into account the days between 8/14 to 11/26 and then 1/22 to 5/8. The storage fee helps ensure we know which students intend to return in the spring and which may not. Additionally, the fee will cover the cost of utilities to operate and staffing to secure the buildings during the interim time. For students who cannot go home or continue to have obligations on campus and in the community, the halls will remain open.

I'm not able to get my things out of my room and need to have my belongings shipped to me.

Contract with Dorm Room Movers to have them pack/ship your belongings to you at an additional cost. You can select this option in the online cancellation form.

Do I need to have insurance if I leave my belongings?

The university assumes no responsibility for students’ personal belongings. Coverage through home-owner’s insurance or from an independent insurance agent is strongly recommended.

Parking
Can I return my parking pass and get a refund?

If you’re leaving for the break period and plan to return, there is no parking cost saved. Parking refunds processed after the fourth week of the fall semester will be at the same rate as those processed through the second week of the spring semester (February 5). If you do not plan to return in the spring, you should contact Parking and Transit Services to discuss refund options.
