How To Sign A Housing Contract

Pay the Admissions Enrollment Deposit today to start the University Housing contract process! The Housing contract is available November 1, 2016. New students who have paid the Admissions Enrollment Deposit after November 1, 2016 will have access to a University Housing contract within 48 hours. Students will receive an email confirmation from University Housing that they now have access to complete a housing contract in MyRed.

Students signing a contract by May 4 will be able to participate in the online Roommate Finder process (beginning April 18) and online room selection process (beginning May 22). The priority date is not the last day students can complete contracts to live on campus. However, students signing contracts after May 4, 2017, will not have access to the Roommate Finder or room selection process, and will be emailed their assigned rooms/roommates by University Housing in late July.

Want priority room selection?   Priority will be given to the students who are in a confirmed roommate pair and the earliest signed dates. Priority will then be given to individuals and the earliest contract signed dates.

Phase 1
  1. Log into MyRed.
    Under “Residence Halls,” select “Access the Housing Portal,” then select “Contract.”
  2. Choose the 2017-18 term. Caution: You will have access to several terms. Please select the 2017-18 term.
  3. Submit the $400 nonrefundable advance payment and sign the contract.
    1. Once a contract is signed, it is a legally binding document and is subject to cancellation fees. It is in the student's best interest to be absolutely certain they will live in a university residence hall before signing a housing contract. If, for example, a student decides to live in a fraternity or sorority house after signing a contract or if anticipating financial aid is not granted, etc., cancellation fees will still apply
    2. The ADMISSIONS Enrollment Deposit is separate from the HOUSING Advance Payment.
  4. Complete each page up to "My Lifestyle Preferences."
  5. The contract status page will show the contract status as "incomplete."
Phase 2
  1. On April 18, students will be notified by email to return to MyRed and begin the Roommate Finder process.
    • Students that did not meet the May 4 priority date will be submitting roommate requests and hall preferences beginning June 16, 2017. University Housing will then email students a room assignment in late July.
Phase 3
  1. On May 16, students will be notified by email on when they may return to MyRed and select a room assignment.
  2. After choosing a room, students will select a bed height (if applicable) and a meal plan.
  3. Finalize the contract by selecting "Complete Housing Process." The contract status will now show "complete."

Cancellation Fees Apply

Once the contract is signed and an advance payment is made, the contract is a legal, binding contract and cancellation fees will apply.

Contract Details

When filling out the contract take note that:

  • Emergency information is up-to-date and accurate. The halls use this information in case of an emergency.
  • If the student plans on applying or being part of a UNL group (i.e. Buffett, Honors, etc.), make your selection in “Special Considerations.”
  • If the student is under the age of 18 on the day they complete their housing contract online, a parent or legal guardian is also required to sign the contract. The parent will receive a letter in the mail as a confirmation that they have signed the contract.
  • Fraternity/Sorority Pledging: The Greek system is separate from UNL Housing. If a student submits a University Housing contract and decides not to live in the residence halls, cancellation fees will apply.
Learning Communities
  • May 1 is the deadline for students wanting to live in a Learning Community.
  • Refer to the timeline below.
  • Learning Community residents will have a $95 charge on their first bill.

Finding A Roommate (April 18-May 4)

On April 18, students will receive an email stating they can log into MyRed and begin the Roommate Finder process. All students need to go through this process whether they already have a roommate or are looking for one. The Roommate Finder will close on May 4, 2017.

  • The Housing Portal will generate roommate matches for students based on responses to the "My Lifestyle Preferences" questions.
  • Use the “Search by Details” tool and enter a requested roommate’s first name, last name and date of birth.
  • “Search for roommate by Lifestyle Preferences questions” option is a tool students could use to find a roommate that matches closely to a particular "Lifestyle Preferences." For example, if a student's biggest concern is that their roommate also plans to have a job while in school, this is the tool to use.
  • ***Be sure the roommate that is requested “Accepts” the request. This is crucial so that roommate pairs can assign both roommates to the same room. ***

Selecting Your Room (May 22-June 15)

*Only for those who submitted contracts by May 4, 2017.

On May 16, 2017, emails are sent to students who completed a housing contract by May 4, 2017.  This email will include an appointment time to select a room. Timeslots are generated in the following order based on the date the contract was signed:

  1. Pairs who signed housing contracts by May 4
  2. Individuals who signed housing contracts May 4.

Students wanting to room with another pair will want to start the contract around the same time AND have confirmed roommates so they receive similar appointment times to select rooms.  Keep in mind, the rooms in our popular halls fill up quickly.

  • Log into MyRed and go to the Housing portal.
  • Be sure roommate requests have accepted the request by May 4 so that a spot is saved for them as well.
  • Students can change their room assignment through June 15 (Room Swap) to any open space after their initial room selection.
  • After selecting a room, select a bed height (if applicable) and a meal plan. 
  • Finally, complete your contract. The “Contract Status” will now show “complete.” Be sure to select “Complete Housing Process”! IMPORTANT: Requested roommates will also need to return to the Housing portal to complete their contract.

Advance Payment

A nonrefundable advance payment of $400 is required with each contract. Contracts submitted before May 1 can submit a minimum nonrefundable $200 advance payment and pay the remaining $200 balance by May 1.

  • University Housing is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (CST)
  • Advance payments paid by paper checks or cash will result in the contract process being delayed until the payment is received.
  • Students may submit the advance payment online by credit/debit (VISA, Mastercard, American Express or Discover) or e-check.

Submitting The Advance Payment

  • Log into MyRed.
  • Under "Residence Halls" select "Access the Housing Portal."
  • Select "Contract" in the red navigation bar across the top of the page.
  • Select the contract term and click "Save and Continue."
  • Select "Advance Payment."
  • Select "Pay Now" and follow the payment prompts.
