The Residence Hall Check-In Process

Check-In

NStudents can expedite the residence hall check-in process by logging in to WAM (What About Me) and confirming/providing basic information needed for residence hall check-in. You can complete the Express Check-In only after you've received notification of your room assignment (late July/early Aug.)

Before you arrive on campus, complete the following steps to expedite your check-in:

(Complete Express Check-In before Aug. 11.)

1. Once you receive notification your room assignment is ready (late July/early Aug.), you may then complete the Express Check-In. Log into your account on the WAM website. In addition to viewing your room assignment information on WAM, we ask you to:

    • Confirm your permanent address and telephone number, as well as your cell phone number. Land line telephones are not provided in University Housing. It is important that we have a working contact number for you.
    • Provide the residence hall staff with your emergency contact information (parent/ guardian name, telephone, etc.), for use in case of emergency.
    • Document information about any medical conditions you may have (asthma, allergies, diabetes, epilepsy, etc.), or any medications you are taking. This information will remain confidential and will only be available to necessary officials, such as Residence Life/University Housing staff, University Police, and emergency medical personnel. This information will only be released to other parties upon the student's completion of a Written Release of Information Form.

2. Review the information provided on the Housing website relating to the move-in process, including:

    • Parking Information (maps, based on which residence hall you are assigned to, indicating where to unload and where to move your vehicle when you are finished unloading)
    • A list of what to (and not to) bring
    • FAQ's
We ask that you complete your Express Check-In additional information by August 11.
When you arrive on campus to check-in to your residence hall, please note:
  • Only students must be present to check-in. Students must check -in before starting to unload.
  • To avoid crowding the check-in area, please ask your family members to remain in the vehicle in a designated loading zone outside while you complete the check-in process.
  • These are some of the steps you will complete to officially check-in:
    • Show your NU ID Card, to verify your identification and confirm your room assignment.
    • Have your NU ID Card photocopied, for use in confirming your identification, should you lock yourself out of your room/unit and need to get a lock-out key/card.
    • Sign your key card and pick up your room/unit key(s), and mailbox key/combination.
  • Even though many residence halls have elevators, you may find it helpful to bring a two-wheel cart or dolly to help with smaller items. A limited number of larger carts are available for a one hour check-out time by leaving an ID and a $5.00 deposit (refundable when the cart is returned).
Parking

Permits that were purchased prior to August 1 were mailed to students. After that date, upon arrival on campus, you will need to purchase your permit at Parking and Transit Services. If you are assigned to Selleck, you need to sign up for a specific unloading time through WAM.

Unloading

Even though many residence halls have elevators, you may find it helpful to bring a two-wheel cart or dolly to help with smaller items. A limited number of larger carts are available for check-out during move-in, for one hour with an ID and a $5.00 deposit (refundable when the cart is returned).

Bed bugs

Anything that you have bought, borrowed or picked up second-hand may be harboring bed bugs, and that's something you really don't want.

You may not be aware of how difficult it is to treat bed bugs and how fast they spread, nor how easy these almost undetectable insects can be. Bed bugs are a one-fourth-inch long reddish brown insect that hides in cracks and crevices of mattresses, box springs, sofas and chairs, according to University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Females can lay three to five eggs a day, and the white eggs about the size of a pin head can be difficult to see. Usually people don't know they have a problem with bed bugs until after they have been bitten. The nocturnal bugs crawl onto sleeping humans and bite, feeding on blood. The bite is painless but the result is red, swollen, blotchy skin that will itch for several days.

A resurgence in bed bugs was noticed in the United States in the late 1990s and the problem has been growing. It can be an especially difficult problem in apartment buildings and other housing units, where the bugs can be brought in by one person and affect nearly everyone, crawling from unit to unit.

Travelers sometimes pick up bed bugs while staying in hotels. The bugs will crawl into suitcases and be brought to homes. They also can be brought into the home through the purchase of used furniture.

So our advice is, if you aren't sure something doesn't have bugs -- don't bring it. (more information at Lancaster Co. Extension)
