Gender Inclusive Housing and Gender Changes

Room Assignment Policy

It is the policy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln that residents will have access to a traditional hall floor/room, suite-style or apartment-style unit consistent with their gender identity. Generally, residents will have access to an assignment with persons of the same gender as identified in their official student record. Any resident who has need of other accommodations, including Gender Inclusive Housing, should email Adam Fitzwater, Assistant Director of Residence Life for Student Leadership and Diversity Initiatives, or call 402-472-3882, for assistance .

Gender Inclusive Housing Options

As noted in University Housing’s mission statement, our commitment is to "Provide an exceptional student living and learning experience." Inherent in this mission is fostering student inclusion and safety to help maximize student success.

In general, residents will have access to a traditional hall/floor, suite-style or apartment-style unit consistent with their gender identity as indicated within their official student record.

Residents who have a gender identity that is different from the sex indicated within their student record can access a gender-specific (male/female) housing assignment consistent with their gender identity.

In addition to gender-specific housing, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH). GIH provides a living environment where a student can room with any other student regardless of sex, gender, gender identity/expression, or sexual orientation. GIH is a safe, affirming, and inclusive living option that focuses on community and support, offered in suite-style and apartment-style housing.

Residents seeking GIH or gender-specific housing that is different from the sex indicated within their student record should email Adam Fitzwater, Assistant Director of Residence Life for Student Leadership and Diversity Initiatives, or call 402-472-3882, for assistance. Students are encouraged to contact Adam as early as possible, as space is available on a first-come/first-served basis.

Students may also wish to contact the LGBTQA+ Resource Center at (402) 472-1652 for information about support and services available to students.
