Ethernet
The Internet connections in the UNL residence halls are a cut above the rest - even when compared to Cable and DSL, the performance is great. Every room in the regular residence halls has two 10Mb Ethernet ports. What does that mean for you? Convenience and ease of use.
When you plug your computer into our network, you gain access to incredible resources. You can browse the web and download files at lightning speeds you could only dream of on a dial-up connection. Not only do you have access to the Internet, but you will also have easy access to many of the University's services. You can send and receive e-mail, search the shelves of Love Library, or even check to see if that section of Spanish is still open. Many teachers even provide course information via their web pages. When you're connected to the network, all this and more is available to you from the comfort of your own room. You'll always be online - no matter what time of day - and you'll never need to dial an ISP again.
And what's more, this high-speed internet access is a free service of the University, provided to you at no extra cost. All you pay for is the network card (NIC) that goes in your computer (most cards cost between $20-$50 and many new computers now come standard with ethernet), or the University can supply and install the card for you.
If you're unsure as to whether or not you have an ethernet port, it's easy to check. An ethernet port (RJ-45) is slightly wider than a standard telephone jack (RJ-11). If your computer has a modem you'll have two RJ-11 jacks. If your computer has ethernet you'll have ONE RJ-45 jack.
Ethernet cables are not provided. Students need to bring a 25 ft. Ethernet cable should they want to have internet access in their rooms. A phone cable will not work.
If you are interested in signing up for an Ethernet connection, look for information in your Housing packet, or come down to the ResNet office in 123 Sandoz. For more information, call Information Services at (402)472-3535 or visit resnet.unl.edu.
