How To Sign A Housing Contract

The 2017-18 housing contract and Roommate Finder process will begin October 17. The process of finding a room will begin November 14. Students with a UNL student account hold will not have access to a University Housing contract.

While there are no deadlines for submitting a housing contract, all completed contracts will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a contract is signed, it is a legally binding document and is subject to cancellation fees. It is in the student's best interest to be absolutely certain they will live in a university residence hall before completing a housing contract. If, for example, a student decides to live in a fraternity or sorority house after signing a contract or if anticipating financial aid is not granted, etc., cancellation fees will still apply.

Phase 1
    1. Log into MyRed.
      Under “Residence Halls,” select “Access the Housing Portal,” then select “Contract.”
    2. Choose the 2017-18 term. Caution: You will have access to several terms. Please select the 2017-18 Academic Year.
    3. Students will receive an email on November 11, 2016 with instructions to return to MyRed indicating yhey can choose a room.
      1. To be eligible for room selection, students must start the housing process (through roommate selection) before November 8, 2016. 
      2. Students who complete the process after November 8 will not receive a time to choose a room until December 1, 2016, and after, depending on the contract start date.
      3. The Roommate Finder will not be available after November 8, 2016.
Phase 2
    1. Appointment times to choose a room (for those that met the November 8 date), will be given in the following priority:
      • Students in pairs based on the date the contract was started.
      • Individuals based on the date the contract was started.
    2. Select a bed height (if applicable).
    3. Select a meal plan.
    4. Complete each page up to the signature page (this includes the non-refundable advance payment).  Rooms will not be saved for students who do not submit the non-refundable $400 advance payment within 3 days of them or their roommate choosing a room.
    5. Complete contract. The “Contract Status” page will now show complete.

Cancellation Fees Apply

Once the contract is signed it is a legal, binding document and cancellation fees will apply.

Contract Details

When filling out the contract take note that:

  • Emergency information is up-to-date and accurate. The halls use this information in case of an emergency.
  • If the student plans on applying or being part of a UNL group (i.e. Buffett, Honors, etc.), make the selection in “Special Considerations.”
  • If the student is under the age of 18 on the day they complete their housing contract, a parent or legal guardian is also required to sign the contract. The parent will receive a letter in the mail as confirmation that they have signed the contract.
  • The priority date is not the last day students can complete contracts to live on campus. Students that meet the priority date will have access to the Roommate Finder and will have the earliest appointment times for the room selection process.

Finding A Roommate (Oct. 17-Nov. 8, 2016)

Beginning October 17, 2016, students will receive an email stating they can log into MyRed and begin the contract and Roommate Finder process. All students need to go through this process whether they already have a roommate or are looking for one.

  • Priority date to complete contract process through Roommate Finder page is November 8.
  • The Roommate Finder tool will not be available after November 8.
  • Students will only have the ability to select one roommate.
    • Students wanting to room with another pair will want to start the contract around the same time AND have confirmed roommates so they receive similar appointment times to select rooms. Note that popular halls and room types do fill up quickly.
  • The Housing portal will generate roommate matches based on responses to the "My Lifestyle Preferences."
  • Use the “Search by Details” tool; enter a requested roommate’s first name, last name, and date of birth.
  • “Search for roommate by Lifestyle Preferences” option is a tool students could use to find a roommate that matches closely to a particular "Lifestyle Preferences" question. For example, if your biggest concern is that your roommate also plans to have a job while in school, this is the tool to use.

 ***Be sure requested roommates accept the request. This is crucial so that one person in the roommate pair assign both students to the same room.***

  • Room Selection appointment times will be given in the following priority:
    1. Students in roommate pairs and then by the earliest contract start date.
    2. Individual students and then by the earliest contract start date.

Selecting Your Room (Nov. 14, 2016-June 15, 2017)

Rooms will not be saved for students who do not submit the non-refundable $400 advance payment and sign the contract within 3 days of you or your roommate choosing a room.

On November 11, students who started the contract process by November 8, 2016 will receive an email stating when you will have access to select a room.

Starting on December 1, students who started the contract process on or after November8, 2016 will receive an email stating they have access to select a room.

  • Log into MyRed and go to the Housing portal.
  • Be sure a requested roommate has accepted the request so that a spot is saved for them as well.
  • Students can change their room assignment through June 15 to any open space after their initial room selection.
  • After selecting a room, select a bed height (if applicable) and a meal plan.
  • Submit the nonrefundable advance payment and complete the signature page.  Rooms will not be saved for students who do not submit the non-refundable $400 advance payment within 3 days of you or your roommate choosing a room.
  • Finally, students will complete their contract. The “Contract Status” will now show “complete.” Be sure to select “Complete Housing Process”!  IMPORTANT: Requested roommates will also need to return to the Housing portal to complete their contract.

Advance Payment

A nonrefundable advance payment of $400 is required with each contract. Contracts submitted before May 1 can submit a minimum nonrefundable $200 advance payment and pay the remaining $200 balance by May 1.

  • Advance payments paid by paper checks or cash will result in the contract process being delayed until the payment is received.
  • Students may submit the advance payment online by credit/debit (VISA, Mastercard, American Express or Discover) or e-check.

Submitting The Advance Payment

  • Log into MyRed.
  • Under "Residence Halls" select "Access the Housing Portal."
  • Select "Contract" in the red navigation bar across the top of the page.
  • Select the contract term and click "Save and Continue."
  • Select "Advance Payment."
  • Select "Pay Now" and follow the payment prompts.
